Soft Edge, Oil Stick and Acrylic
In order to include Dina’s work in this event, we picked two of her paintings from the 1970’s that were close in size to the 24” square panels, then re-stretched them to fit.
In addition to standing alone as strong, second-generation abstract expressionist paintings, the pair highlight themes which would eventually find their way into her sculpture—
The Palette Knife piece introduces the abstract expressionist surface treatment Dina would later grind into her stainless steel work.
The Soft Edge painting suggests the accumulation of forms later made three-dimensional in her sculpture, as well as the softly painted surfaces of some pieces.
